The ICE series event for February 6th was postponed due to extreme cold temperatures: -5 degrees for a daytime high with 15-20 mph winds! That extended cold snap caused Nelson to freeze over a large portion of the lake during most of February, but with a week to go with the alternate tournament date of February 27th the weather did heat up and ice thawed from the south boating access so boats could launch on tournament day!
Tournament day 6 teams came to compete, and conditions were COLD, 20 degrees in the boat is not easy on anglers or their equipment. But the desire to fish for these 6 teams outweighed those “minor” inconveniences and all set off into the fog of Nelson lake with one intention, to catch bass. Water temps varied greatly across the lake and all competitors found themselves sharing the same fishing holes, but the bass were hungry, and the competition was tight!
Team Colton Blomberg and Malikye Toliver came in first place for largest 5 bass with 84.5 inches only beating Tanner Mallams by 1 inch! Alex Martel took home the big bass prize with a 19.25-inch football that was just as big around as it was long weighing over 5 pounds. Finesse was key this event as Texas-rigged worms, drop-shots, and tubes were what gave our winners their best fish.
Next Saturday March 6th is our last ICE series event of the winter, we hope to see you there!
